twin girls 9 months adjusted in a twingo baby carrier

This Mama has 5 children, the newest of which are these twin girls, born 3 months early. Here she is wearing the New and amazing Twingo, the newest addition to my teaching and lending library.

The Twingo carrier is color coded, and works with twins and close age babies, like mine were!!! Can you imagine all the trouble that I would have been saved by having this 5 years ago!!?!

Here I am tandem wearing a ton of different ways in this old post.

https://closeathandbaby.wordpress.com/2011/04/

I see looking back how many moms were coming to my group to learn tandem wearing, and how I ended up focusing on that in my private practice these days.  Man I would have rocked a Twingo so many times a day, like this mama above did to vacuum!

Because of the twins being 3 months premature this mama encountered a lot of barriers to breastfeeding and bonding with her babies in their early days.  Wearing the babies brings them back together and reclaims some of that time together lost to the hospital stay.

The whole Family is really interested in using the carriers and participating with the Babies.

The Twingo was cool to the older siblings because they saw their mom use it all as one carrier for both babes, and then they broke it down and were both able to use it to put the twins on their backs while they went back to their business.   These baby girls are sweet natured and aren’t prone to long bouts of crying, so the carriers were mostly interesting to this family for their hands-free benefits.

When working with twins, especially on a third visit, I often have the opportunity to grab a snuggle.

This mama is still healing from the trauma of the premature birth experience.  We discussed wrapping one twin on the front in her preferred single baby carrier,  The One Love Wrapsody Hybrid, for at least one hour a day and just singing and rocking and hugging and holding each other.  This creates some of the chemical reactions that take place during breast feeding which will hopefully help to speed up some of the emotional healing needed after a journey like this.

Ultimately I left totally inspired by this mama and her older children and their home that they have created.  I hope that this visit finally addressed how this family really wanted to use baby carriers.  I think I had gone in assuming the first and second time that the babies must be needing to be carried more or one must have hight needs, but the truth here is, that the Wearing in this case is mostly for the healing of the older members of the family, especially the mama, and that the babies are already doing optimal and amazing and are content and sleep regularly and don’t cry regularly for any reason.

It really was amazing to hear this mama’s birth story, and it reminded me that Systemic Racism is real ( http://racism.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1114:racial-discrimination04&catid=88&Itemid=274&showall=&limitstart=4 ) , and that I want to change the public health system so that everyone has access to a baby carrier, because closeness is a powerful and healing  right, not just for the financially privileged.

The Twin Journey – An Amazing Slice of How it Might Really Be.

Over the years, its been my honor to be involved in several family journey’s welcoming twins.  This beautiful family was amazing enough to let me document their experiences with babywearing, breast feeding, and their nicu stay.

We first met in Elephant Ears, our store, where we learned that they were expecting identical twin boys.  This amazing couple was eager to gain skills to help them handle 2 babies!

Mom and Dad were both eager to learn about baby carriers, car seats and everything baby. Times 2.

Practicing every Sunday until they felt prepared, these devoted parents – to – be were slowly chipping away at the fear that can come with expecting multiples.

When the boys came, those skills came in handy.

Here are mommy and daddy below snuggling up for a tube feeding of breast milk instead of the boys laying in bed.

After a few weeks, everyone went home safe and started using their baby carrier skills to really help handle the logistics of 2 babies at once.

Building the confidence to care for twins in your home can be hard. I hope everyone can feel as inspired as I was by this amazing couple, that anyone can do it, with a little forethought and a little babywearing.

Babywearing in a time of great change.

Who ever thought that the woman who started this blog would be a full time working Mom with 3 Kids under 6.

I find endless comfort and closeness when I wear my children.  Snuggling down with one of my babies in a wrap is the ultimate in reconnecting with my family every evening after long days working at Elephant Ears.

I feel such a stron connection to my family every time a wrap one of my children. I can't believe Zephyr is already 2 years old!

My little last baby has grown up too fast. When I wrap him, we fall back into a close easy loving rythm that reminds me of when he was just a little bug, riding along with me everywhere to do everything.

This Wrap is Ela in Wonderland by the brand Kokadi. It is so full of love, I just had to add it to my collection. I think we happily waited 6 months while it was on preorder. :)

Ela is a dense wrap but thin, it will be great year round and I am so happy to have added it to my collection.  It was a great pick for us, having tall lanky kids,  because it has a bit of a wider width.  Judah has decided it is one of the prettiest wraps in the collection.

I caught one of the big kids that day too :) Wearing my children is still my reason for living. It drives me through every day and inspires me to meet every client I encounter where they are at, in order to introduce them to babywearing.

Triplets and a Big Sister!!

When I arrived, I found 3 sleeping Babies (and a sleeping toddler) and 3 Very Happy looking Caregivers!

When I arrived, I found 3 sleeping Babies (and a sleeping toddler) and 3 Very Happy looking Caregivers!  But then we started waking them up.

This is Mom and Grandma with the two boys.  Sisters were still sleeping and we played with the boys in the carriers first.  We all talked about our goals.  This mama had been given many carriers and this visit from me as a gift from a dear sweet family member who is a babywearing enthusiast.  This amazing mom of 6 week old triplets and one 22 month old was determined to explore her options in babywearing and to try everything.  So thats what we did!

She was hands free and happy in no time in a gauze wrap. worn in a front wrap cross carry.

Over all, we explored and tried on the following carriers:  Beco Butterfly, Moby Wrap, Wrapsody Wraps, Sleeping Baby Productions Ringsling, Chimparoo Meitai, an Original Ergo Carier and a Babyhawk Meitai. We had a blast, and I think that these parents felt empowered by their new arsenal of powerful tools for their life journey with 4 babies!

Love and Babywearing to all those expecting triplets!

Twin Update – She’s Having My Baby Edition

Hi all!  A few people have asked for an update on the wonderful couple that I was working with last year privately adopting twins.  THis was the special couple who was involved with the Oxygen Network TV show “She’s Having My Baby” that came through Elephant Ears and our lives near the end of last year.

Te episode aired as the Finale of the Series and our Featured Birth Mom’s name was Lindsay.  You can see a review here:  http://www.ivillage.com/im-having-their-baby-season-finale-review/6-a-483157

To close off the multiple success of this story, here is an actual screenshot I took of the episode at the end, of Mike and Julie with their Son and Daughter, happily wrapped on camera for all the world to see, in a Wrapsody Bali Stretch Hybrid Kai. :) It has been perfect as parenting can be, ever since.

I feel so inspired by all the beautiful adoption stories out there, as well as all the beauty of twin parenting.  My practice has seemed to bring me into so much contact with so much of both, and I am so eternally grateful to all of the families that share their experience with me so that I can become a better educator for all of the babies and parents-to-be that are out there, that are just looking for a little closeness.

Much Love

Don’t Worry!!! Becca is Still Wrapping!!!! (And Dreaming Big)

Just so you all know. 🙂

I just don't want all of you to think that with all of this wonderful running around, teaching, and working, that we aren't still wrapping and loving each other endlessly!

The next thing on my radar along with everything we are doing with Elephant Ears and its educational programming, is a trip to Ethiopia to visit the country’s largest orphanage to develop programming with the founder, an amazing woman named Abebech Gobena.  You can learn about her here:

Playing with Babywearing in a Brace for Hip Dysplasia.

Hello all!  This is a special post about a special baby and mama who really have done so much to stay together, close and happy while having a non-conventional start.   This little 5 week old was born with hip dysplasia, a condition not too uncommon, and corrected therapeutically by wearing a Pavlik harness or other Type of Brace (pictured below) to gently hold the babies legs in the optimal position to promote optimal deep hip socket development.

Babywearing in soft carriers that take the babies shape and support the baby all the way from the back of the knee to the back of the other knee is an ideal practice harmonizing with the harnesses and Braces and other hip dysplasia therapies for babies.

here is an upclose shot of the Boots and Bar that helps to make up the positioning device that the baby wears.

We also tried wrapping and found success both ways! I am happy to see that babywearing has many paths to success for these mamas and babies starting out with hip dysplasia!
